CLEVELAND -- A 5 On Your Side investigation uncovered thousands of counterfeit electronics in everything from common extension cords to video games. While counterfeit electronics are cheaper, they're also prone to fail. The nation's electronics industry warns this is a serious safety threat. From extension cords to batteries for your cameras and games, failure of these electronics could start a fire in your home. "I'd be very afraid if I bought something and all of a sudden it caused a fire at my house," Brett Brenner said. Brenner heads up the Electrical Safety Foundation. A Kentucky man is facing charges in Mississippi for allegedly selling nearly $15,000 in phony apparel over the Internet, Attorney General Jim Hood said Tuesday. During a news conference, Hood displayed some of the nearly 200 fake Ralph Lauren Polo and Lacoste shirts that Jerry Best Sr., 57, is accused of selling. The shirts, still in plastic, came in a variety of colors and looked identical to shirts found at department stores. The retail value of the authentic shirts is about $75. Best allegedly sold the fakes for $20.

The United Kingdom’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) seized nearly half a million pounds worth of counterfeit medicines on Mar. 26, 2009 in Middlesbrough, England, according to a MHRA press release. The enforcement team arrested four Chinese nationals allegedly involved in the sale and supply of counterfeit drugs.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 30-
A new anti Counterfeit Agency proposed under the recently passed Anti Counterfeit Act 2008 should operational by June, the government said on Monday.
 Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industrialization, Professor John Lonyangapuo said the government had set aside Sh300 million in the next financial year, to fund the agency’s operations.
“It’s not easy to start up a set up like that but we are getting there and in the next one or two months you will see things happening,” the PS said, adding that more than 1000 experts had been registered as resource persons for the agency.

New guidance to patients to raise public awareness of fake medicine and its dangers has been launched by the RPSGB and MHRA.
Pharmacies nationwide will receive the guidance, which has been developed in conjunction with patient groups to ensure it is clear and easy to read. Pharmacies will be asked to distribute the new double-sided postcard-sized leaflet to patients in their prescription bags.
